September brings the beginning of Libra Season – the same day as the Autumnal Equinox where light and dark come into balance and day and night sit equal to one another.
A day filled with divine paradox yet complete equilibrium. As Libra Season begins and the Equinox invites us into its arms, we are handed two opposing states of being and are reminded that life, just like us, just like this day, can hold two possibilities, two states, two truths, two directions together at once and not just coexist, but in truth, need each other for both to come alive.
Just as light cannot exist without dark, and self cannot exist without the other. On this day, we are reminded that nothing exists in isolation.
This is Libra.
When is Libra Season?
Entering the constellation of Libra on 23 September and continuing into 23 October, the Sun in astrology represents the centre of Self. It is our experience. Our life force. Our spirit.
And as it journeys through the 12 zodiacs it brings these parts of us with it and throughout this season, we too are invited over this next month to step into the essence that is Libra. To become it, learn from it, and begin to experience the world through its lens.
Whether Libra is your Sun Sign, Moon Sign, Mercury or Pluto, or simply lives in one of the astrological houses in your Birth Chart, we all have Libra alive within us, operating in different volumes and expressing itself in different areas of our lives.
And as the Sun shines in this Venus-ruled air sign, the Libra in each of us steps to the forefront to be embodied and experienced.
The Purpose of Libra
In Astrology, Libra represents our first awareness of the other.
The journey through the zodiac is directed by two distinct chapters.
The first half, Aries to Virgo, is the development of the individual self. These signs are self-directed, aimed at both creating and learning about who we are, offering us definition and clarity of self.
The second half, Libra to Pisces, symbolises our journey out in the world and our relationship to other people, society, and life itself.
Libra then, is the meeting point of these two chapters.
It is where the Self meets the Other and represents the lifelong journey of exploring and seeking balance between the self and the other, and the self among others.
It is the archetype of collaboration and partnership, where we come together with another to enhance the beauty and joy of the human experience.
It is where we are exposed to other perspectives and are learning how to balance and live within those different, and often opposing, perspectives while remaining in a state of harmony within.
Libra is the opportunity to see and learn through the eyes of another, through our vast and diverse experiences, opinions, and unique journeys and through that, move beyond the limitation of the self on its own.
And it reminds us of the truth that we are not alone in this journey, and in fact, others play an integral role in the building or our identity and sense of self.
To be alive is to be in relationship. In relationship to one another, with ourselves, and the world around us.
Sometimes it is within another the words we are ready to hear, the softness we are ready to receive, the perspective ready to crack us open, and the mirror through which to see ourselves more clearly.
Sometimes it is within offering love to another that we gain access to it ourselves.
We cannot not be in relationship. We are made better with those around us.
With partnership and harmony central themes to its purpose and intentions, Libra has an intuitive ability to sense the balance, or imbalance, in the energy around it.
Whether in a conversation, a relationship, an outfit, within the home, a piece of art, or the workplace, Libra is always intuitively aware of what the other, others, or something, needs in any moment to arrive in a state of peace, balance, beauty, and fairness – and can then become, or offer, that very thing.
Libra and the Attunement to the Other
When we are still learning to work with and access the gifts of Libra, we may first find ourselves stumbling around in the lower possibilities of the archetype while we find our way.
For Libra this can look like its devotion to short term harmony placed before long-lasting harmony, driven by a fear of discord, imbalance, unpleasantries, of conflict.
A fear that can often come back to a lack of safety within the body as the self, Libra and often learns to read the other before learning how to read the self.
To read the other means we know what is needed in that moment to create a sense of balance, or a feeling of safety, within the interaction and environment and therefore ourselves, whether it is the most supportive, authentic, or aligned direction for the long term or not.
To learn to tune into the other before tuning into the self can create a distance between own needs, desires, and preferences.
And for this, we turn to Libra’s opposite sign, Aries.
The Axis of Aries and Libra
In Astrology, each zodiac exists on an axis in partnership with its opposite sign. Just as Libra teaches us, these signs in seeming opposition find themselves as partners, both needing the other to come alive.
In both partnership and opposition from Libra is the first of the zodiac, Aries. When we find ourselves in an unsupportive expression of one zodiac, we can look to its opposition for the guidance.
Aries invites Libra to come back to the self, tune into its own energy away from another’s, and connect into its own desires. For this, we need a healthy amount of space and opportunities to get to know ourselves. Time spent creating or observing art, exploring what we find beautiful, playing in the inner workings of the mind and dreaming up an ideal day in the life.
Libra is an air sign, it conceptualises, it mentalises, it learns, expresses and processes and shares. There is a strong intellectual drive to Libra that asks us to continue feeding into the mind.
To spend time with the mind through journaling or any other creative endeavours will help in establishing the deeper and more confident sense of self that is represented by Aries.
Aries teaches us courage, safety, and direct communication. The boldness and directness of Aries in communication partnering with the diplomatic, fair, and harmonious communication of Libra is the leader, the peacemaker, the mediator.
There is a magic in directly and confidently communicating our needs while feeling safe in our bodies to do so, and also considering the other in a way that is fair, loving, considering and peaceful.
Another way to support the gifts of Libra to flourish this season, or always, is to create time and space to come into the body.
Being an air sign can sometimes feel like its living purely in the mind. The medicine is in the body. In not just analysing our experience but being in it. Not just conceptualising love but expressing it. Not just understanding emotions but feeling them. A devotion to balance and harmony is one that is needed in our world, yet can have us close our eyes to what may not fit within that ideal state.
To be fully alive is to journey into depths that live beyond the peaceful and harmonious realm of Libra. Emotions often demand to be felt fully, and that may not always be a beautiful thing in the moment. Love, when surrendered to, can take over us, taking us into depths beyond our rational mind and throwing us out of balance. And in those depths are immense healing and catalysing opportunities to come home to ourselves and all of life.
Your Libra Season Invitations
An air sign ruled by Venus, this archetype knows the value in beauty, perhaps more than any other zodiac sign, and it is throughout this season that we are invited to look through the eyes of Libra. That is, to seek beauty in all, and to add beauty where we can.
This appreciation and creation of beauty is an integral key in Libras evolutionary purpose; to promote harmony.
A sensitivity to aesthetics, Libra intuitively understands that a harmonious environment, whether through design, colour, furnishings, fashion, nature, florals, art, words, or something else, supports harmony from within. It calms the nervous system and invites a softening breath out.
Like all zodiac signs that begin with a new season, Libra is a cardinal sign. Cardinal signs initiate. They are designed to exert energy into the world and begin a new chapter.
Libra thrives when moving and working towards something, whether creating, connecting, or taking steps towards it dreams and desires. A likeable, beautiful, graceful, and pleasing archetype, underneath the surface of this sign is acute awareness, insights, creativity, charisma, and also a deep drive to move forward in the world, to meet fairness and justice wherever it can, and a sharp mind and skill of diplomacy and communication.
