The Sun Tarot Card Meaning
A nude, carefree child joyfully waves a long, red flag and wears a flower crown/garland with a red feather in their hair. The child appears happy as s/he rides the white horse, seemingly content with its role. Both figures represent elements of innocence, purity and freedom. We are able to see four sunflowers extending from the stone wall behind them. Sunflowers symbolize energies of life force, vitality and joy. The Sun, itself, presents with human-like facial features and twenty-one rays (11 straight, 10 wavy) of golden/yellow sunshine beaming from it.

The Sun Upright
The Sun is known to be the most powerful, positive and affirmative card in the tarot. Not only does The Sun indicate fresh starts, but when it does appear, it is a sure sign that those new beginnings are sure to be surrounded by joy, excitement, optimism, blessings, etc. In the simplest way, The Sun appearing in your tarot reading is saying “yes” to whatever your question may be and is validating you, your choices and/or your efforts. In addition, your relationships, interactions, plans, etc are blessed and a positive energy and outcome is predicted.
It is possible that you are naturally optimistic and may even tend to look on the brighter side. When The Sun appears, it can also signify a time when you are being validated and acknowledged for your confidence. The Sun inspires you to keep the optimism up–letting go and letting flow as you move forward. In many ways, this energy encourages you to celebrate and to embrace the moment.
With the light and bold presence of the color yellow influencing much of The Sun card, you may be feeling guided to utilize and take advantage of your personal power. Exercising your free will, freedom and/or freedom of choice may be a significant theme.
When The Sun appears, your presence is noticed and your energy is definitely felt by those around you. That being said, this archetype showing up in a tarot spread may suggest that you embrace and see yourself, your situation, etc from a brighter, more carefree perspective. Let loose and simply allow yourself to enjoy the people, places and experiences available to you as the steps continue to fall into place.
You can trust that any difficult and/or troubling times are behind you and that better times are ahead. If this is a situation where you are waiting on results, The Sun is the most powerful validation that things are and/or will be going your way.Â
The Sun’s upright meaning may also be reminding you that your time, energy, choices and decisions are not only in your hands, but that you can relax, knowing that no matter what you decide (within reason, of course), everything will eventually work itself out.Â
This card radiates positivity. Take this energy as a sign that you are in a powerful, positive and safe space to move ahead with your plans. Now is the time to take action, so trust yourself and have confidence in your choices. You are also encouraged to try new things and to be open to having new experiences. This is your moment and opportunity to go for it.
This major arcana card is a positive sign that your happiness, fulfilment and/or contentment is underway and in alignment with your choices. Regardless of whether or not those choices revolve around love, romance, career, finances, house, family, etc; you can relax and breathe easy, knowing that the Universe is working on your behalf and that you are on your divine path.
The Sun Reversed
When The Sun is reversed, it can indicate a time when things are working to your benefit but you may not be able to see and/or accept it–at least not yet. You may be lacking confidence when this energy presents itself. Additionally, you might be struggling to acknowledge your good fortune and/or unable to see it altogether. If this resonates in any way, just know that with the presence of The Sun, even though reversed, blessings and better times are still on the horizon–whether or not you are ready and/or able to see it.
The reversed version of The Sun may acknowledge a time when there is a truth that has yet to be revealed. On a core level, you may be the one withholding the truth; whether it is from yourself and/or from another/others. This reversed meaning is serving to remind you that whatever the “truth” may be, it cannot and should not be hidden forever or for much longer. In addition, it will most likely benefit you to reveal and/or uncover any hidden information (“truth”).
On the other hand, you may be wondering if now is the time to reveal and/or share something that you have been keeping to yourself. If so, the Sun tarot card reversed would encourage you to refrain from exposing yourself and/or any hidden, unacknowledged, unspoken truths at this time. You may also be best served by waiting for a better moment and/or opportunity to present itself before moving forward. No matter how confident you might be feeling, if you are seeing The Sun reversed, it is possible that you may be overestimating your abilities and/or odds. That being said, wait for clarity, more information, etc before proceeding.
The reversed form of this archetype may also be shedding light upon your focus and ability, or rather your inability, to be right here, right now. Remember, yesterday is in the past and tomorrow is a day away; so really, all you truly have is right here, right now. Even if you are feeling insecure and/or uncertain of yourself, your future, etc, do your best to embrace your current good fortune and maybe even allow yourself to have a bit of fun.Â
The Sun in a reversed position could also be the Universe’s way of calling you to step out and/or to release yourself from anything/anyone that has been holding you back from being true to yourself. Notice if and/or when you are preventing yourself from being seen, heard and/or understood. Consider what you can do to take positive, healthy steps to move forward and/or make progress. Stop holding back if you have been resisting and/or delaying, now is the time.
