The Star Tarot Card Meaning
The Star presents as a fair, golden/blonde haired, nude maiden who appears in a pristine, garden-like setting during what is likely a twilight hour. We are only able to see her profile even though she is plainly naked. She even seems to be comfortable, unbothered and/or unfazed with her situation, environment, etc.
She is kneeling on the dry ground with her left side; as she steps into the pool of water on her right side. She is surrounded by eight, eight-pointed stars – seven white smaller stars and a single, larger, yellow/gold star hovering above her. The silhouette of a distant mountain looms off behind her right side. To her left side, a bird sits in a nearby treetop upon a hill.
Clear blue water pours from both of the pitchers she holds in either of her hands. She seems to be preoccupied with the one she is emptying into the pool in front of her. Meanwhile, she doesn’t seem to notice that the other pitcher is pouring water onto the grass. While the water flows in various directions on the dry ground, it seems as though it is watering the grass.

The Star Upright
The Star meaning can be interpreted and represented through both the nude maiden at the edge of the water; as well the actual gold/yellow star hovering above and the white stars surrounding the maiden. This archetypal energy serves as a symbol of hope, faith and renewed belief in your goals, dreams and greater aspirations in life – especially if you have been struggling and/or experiencing difficulties.
If this card is showing up in your tarot reading, consider it as a positive sign and an encouraging reminder for you to remain hopeful in regards to your inquiry – whatever it may be. While you may not have all of the information you might want and/or need, trust and have faith that the steps you have taken (and are taking) are working to your benefit, especially in the long run. You are being validated by the Universe in your efforts and are encouraged to reconnect to your faith and keep going.
The upright Star ushers in a sigh of relief and serves a symbol that better times are ahead more than anything, so don’t give up. If you have felt uninspired and/or lost, consider The Star as a card of hope and your guiding light and message that you can and will overcome any hardships, losses, etc. Be open to the possibilities and focus on trusting that The Universe is working on your behalf.
You may be in a space of having to surrender to the unknown and/or to let go of control in some way. The Star is here to remind you to breathe and allow. Remember to be present to the moment, while doing your best to go with the flow. Keep your sense of hope and optimism healthy and balanced more than anything.
The Star card’s association with healing, health, wellness, a sense of purpose, etc can also be a sign of recovery and/or that better times are not only still possible, but they are underway, and coming your way. Where there is work to be done and/or steps to be taken, continue to do the work and take the steps. Trust that you are on your way and remember, there is still a journey ahead so keep going, this is not the end. Do your best to allow the journey in and of itself, to guide and inspire you onward.
If you are hoping to attain success and/or to be in the spotlight in some form, The Star is here to validate and affirm you. This energy may even be encouraging you to step back and see that you, yourself, are “The Star” of your own story. That being said, recognize and envision yourself, in your own way and in your own right, as a “star on the rise”.
Regardless of whether or not your inquiry is personal and/or professional in nature, this archetype is a big sign that whatever your dreams are, you have what it takes to make it happen. In fact, whether you know it or not, whether you realize it or not–you are and have already been taking the steps necessary to get there, wherever/whatever that is.
Additionally, you, your work, your efforts, etc are being noticed and it is only a matter of time before it all comes together. This major arcana card asks you to trust that as you keep up the good work, your next steps and the bigger pieces of the puzzle, will reveal themselves.
The Star Reversed
When reversed, The Star can reflect hopelessness, discontent and/or even an unrealistic view of things. Self-doubts, fears, etc might be coming up and your sense of direction, focus, clarity may be clouded. It is possible that your perception of things may not be aligned with the reality of it. For example, you may be overreacting and/or thinking the very worst about something/someone when in reality, that is not the case whatsoever.
If you have not been feeling hopeless, worried, etc The reversed Star card could represent a lack of attention. This may be a good time for you to consider whether or not you have been careless and/or distracted when it comes to your responsibilities, goals, etc. Whether this deals with your inner world, your outer world or all of the above, your attention and sense of inspiration might be lacking.
The Star in reverse can also be an indication that you are placing too much value and/or emphasis on goals, pursuits, people, etc that may not fully work out and/or pay off in the end. That being said, take a moment to reconsider your steps and/or how much time, energy, effort, etc you are willing/able to keep giving at this point.Â
The reversed version of this archetype may also show up during moments when your perception is skewed in some way. Your ability to balance reality with imagination might be blurred and/or your goals may be blurring your ability to perceive with clarity. In other words, while you are encouraged to dream big, remember to follow the old saying: Keep your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground.Â
The Star reversed is here to remind you that while it is beautiful to dream, you cannot actually create something from nothing. The dream is there to motivate and inspire you into action, to open you up to the possibility. At some point though, an aligned action must be taken in order for the vision to become reality.
Additionally, with the reversed Star, you are encouraged to recognize whether or not you are putting your own goals, hopes, dreams, etc on hold in some way. Often, the idea of bringing vision into reality can be daunting, intimidating and/or overwhelming. Ask yourself whether or not you have been holding back from pursuing your dreams and more importantly, why. Perhaps it has felt safer for you to remain in the imagination stage so you avoid the applied action stage for whatever reason(s). If that is the case, see this as your sign that it is time to turn things around.
The Star in reverse would encourage you to look at the bigger picture and to take things step by step. Do your best not to get too overwhelmed, especially when all of the intricate details along the way have not yet been revealed. The point is if you are experiencing any doubts, fears, overwhelm, etc, this major arcana tarot card asks you to simply do your best to overcome any hardships, etc. Embrace and realize that by taking it one step at a time, you will eventually find your way. The key though, is that you must be willing to take the first step. From there, keep going and have faith in your ability to succeed.
