Four of Pentacles Card Meaning
A male figure is seen sitting alone on a stone pillar with four golden coins. There is a single coin under each of his feet (two total). Meanwhile, he is grasping onto the third coin with both of his hands; and the fourth pentacle is sitting atop his crowned head. He has dark hair and is wearing a black cape/cloak and a red garment lined with a strip of blue fabric/ribbon along the hemline. He appears to be crouching over the coin he is holding. A city/village can be seen in the background behind him.

Four of Pentacles Upright
Themes dealing with physical foundations, insecurity and/or instability may arise when the upright Four of Pentacles appears. Generally speaking, this card shows up during times when you may be keeping to yourself and/or withholding in some form. For whatever reason, you may also be experiencing feelings of lack and/or your mentality may be fixated on what you do not currently possess. There may be fears or doubts coming up with the presence of this card. One way or another, just be sure that you are not clinging onto a person, place, idea, situation, etc that truly is not serving you.
The Four of Pentacles upright may be a sign that now is not the time to be taking any serious risks, especially if the potential risk could affect you on a more major level. On the other hand, this energy could also be signaling that you are feeling very risk averse, preferring to maintain the current status quo. Additionally, you may not be in a position to make any risky moves–even if you are willing. You may not be “in the right place” to make the types of shifts or changes that you would like to make with the Four of Pentacles appearing.
On the positive side, the Four of Pentacles appearing in a tarot reading could be signaling the completion of a goal or even the attainment of an accomplishment. If you have been hoping to secure or hold onto something/someone, consider this your sign that you have managed (or will manage) to succeed. Additionally, you may be feeling very satisfied and/or comfortable with you current circumstances. If anything, the Four of Pentacles can be an indication of contentment. At times it can show up during moments when you are unwilling to change or alter your current situation because of the security that you have managed to attain.
If you are in a relationship and your inquiry is about love, you and/or your partner may not be in a forthcoming position. You or your partner may not be ready to extend themselves and/or share their time, energy, resources, etc beyond what they have been thus far. Acknowledging selfishness and/or selfish/self-centered behavior(s) may also be present with the Four of Pentacles showing up around matters of love.
There may be some discomfort in regards to growth or development. There may also be fears around future security where the relationship is concerned. One or both of you may simply be feeling physically insecure and/or uncomfortable if not financially. Be mindful of any possessiveness or possessive behaviors. If you are experiencing any of these possibilities, do your best to work on recognizing and mindfully releasing this energy.
Your career/work may be experiencing a stalemate with the Four of Pentacles present. You may be feeling as though your opportunities are sparse and/or as though you do not have many, if any, other options at this time. There may be fears around job security or stability and/or you may be worried about your current position. If there is an opportunity presenting itself, this card could mean that you are likely not ready or willing to apply yourself (or accept). You may be lacking confidence around your ability to step into a bigger/different role. You and/or a co-worker, colleague, etc may be withholding certain information that could affect you/your work.
Four of Pentacles Reversed
Seeing the reversed Four of Pentacles, for the most part, is one of those situations that could actually be a good thing. You are starting to acknowledge any fixations and are in a position to let go in a healthy way. Any feelings and/or attitudes dealing with lack, insecurity, instability, etc are turning around and should be alleviated. Where you may have been experiencing concerns or doubts around security, you are now opening up and feeling much more at ease with your wealth, resources, etc. You may be feeling more generous and/or safe to share your resources as well.
It is possible that you could be experiencing movement of some kind with the reversed Four of Pentacles appearing in a tarot card reading. Usually, this movement, whether literally or symbolically, is heading in a direction toward expansion and could go very quickly or swiftly. Your investments, hard work and/or efforts have brought you to a space of stability; and you are no longer having to experience fears or doubts about your circumstances. You may also be feeling much more free and fluid with your money and/or your ability to spend.
Be mindful of your resources with the Four of Pentacles in reverse. While you may be gaining confidence financially, you want to make sure that you are not overly confident and end up unintentionally spending beyond your means. Additionally, keep this in mind when it comes to your physical movement and/or health. Just because you think that you can do something (whether physically or financially), make sure not to over do it. Even though you may be feeling much more capable/able, remember, your goals and progress are still developing, so pace yourself. The reversed card could also be an indication of losing control, feeling like you are losing control and/or letting go (or being forced to let go) of something/someone you once felt attached to–whether you want to or not.
In relationships, the Four of Pentacles reversed may signal a time of flexibility and openness. It may arise after a time of insecurity and/or feeling shut down. You and/or your partner may be in a forthcoming position and/or gaining confidence around expressions, exchanges, shifts, etc. One or both partners may be “letting go” in a healthy way; especially if there have been any fears/doubts coming up as it relates to the future, growth and/or the development of your connection. Either way, this energy promotes a sense of “opening up” and allowing for more fluidity, freedom and movement within the relationship.
This reversed card may also appear as a sign of success if you have been trying to let go of someone/something and/or if you have been working to free yourself from someone/something. It is possible that an unhealthy relationship or situation (work, environment, etc) is turning around and you will no longer be restricted, stuck or restrained from moving on.Â
